How to Install and Use the LegisTracerEU Windows App

1. Download and Install the App

  1. Open the Microsoft Store at https://apps.microsoft.com/ or launch the "Microsoft Store" app in Windows.
  2. In the search field, enter Eu law search and press Enter.
  3. Find and install the LegisTracerEU app.
  4. Start the app from your Start menu or directly from the Store.

2. First Launch: Trial Mode

3. Complete Setup

  1. Click the Setup tab.
  2. Enter your email and passkey (API key). If you don’t have a passkey, register here to receive one.
  3. Select your working languages.
  4. Click Confirm.
  5. If setup is successful, the orange Trial Mode banner will disappear.

About the Setup Tab: Explanation of Each Option

  • Email:
    Enter the email address you used to register for LegisTracerEU. This is required to identify your account and activate your license or trial.
  • Passkey (API Key):
    Enter the passkey (API key) you received by email after registration. This key unlocks full access to the app’s features. If you do not have a passkey, register here to receive one.
  • Working Languages:
    Select the languages you work with most often. This setting customizes the app’s interface and search experience to your preferred languages.
  • Appearance:
    Choose between light and dark mode for the app interface. This helps reduce eye strain and matches your system or personal preference.
  • UI and Results Font Settings:
    Adjust the font family and size for both the app interface and search results. This is useful for accessibility and personal comfort.
  • Trados Studio Search Strategy:
    Select how the app integrates with Trados Studio for searching. Options may include direct segment search, context-aware search, or custom strategies to optimize translation workflow.
  • Confirm:
    After entering your email, passkey, and selecting languages, click Confirm to save your settings and activate your account. The orange Trial Mode banner will disappear if activation is successful.
  • Check for Updates:
    Use this option to manually check if a new version of the app is available. Keeping the app updated ensures you have the latest features and bug fixes.
  • Advanced Settings:
    Some versions may include advanced options such as proxy configuration, search behavior tweaks, or interface preferences. Adjust these only if you have specific requirements or have been advised by support.
  • List of Indices for Maintenance:
    This section lists your custom search indices (created in the Upload References tab). You can delete indices here if you no longer need them.
  • Delete Index:
    Click the red button next to an index to permanently remove it from your account. This is useful for managing and cleaning up your custom search indices.

4. Perform a Law Search

  1. Go to the Search tab.
  2. Enter a phrase (e.g., Implementing Decision should therefore be amended accordingly.).
  3. Click All to search all EU Law.
  4. Results will display below the search field.

5. Expand Context

  1. Below any result, click Expand Context to see more of the legal text around your search hit.

6. Search EU Terminology

  1. Click the IATE Terminology tab.
  2. Enter a term (e.g., mining) and click Search.
  3. Terminology results will appear below.

7. Upload References (Create Custom Index)

  1. Click the Upload References tab, then Upload Celex Numbers.
  2. In the yellow field, enter a name for your index (e.g., feedback) and press Enter.
  3. In the green field, enter Celex numbers separated by commas (e.g., 32021R1119, 32014L0065).
  4. Click the blue Upload button. Wait for the upload to complete (look for a “COMPLETED” message).

8. Switch and Search Custom Indices

  1. In the Search tab, use the Search Index dropdown (top right) to select your custom index (e.g., feedback).
  2. Try searching for various texts in your custom indices.

9. Delete a Custom Index

  1. Go to the Setup tab.
  2. Under “List of indices for Maintenance,” you’ll see your custom indices.
  3. Click the red button to delete an index if needed.
